| i had really forgotten about xanga. i guess i haven't really had much to say - or if i did, i was too afraid of what people would think to actually say it. well, i have a lot to say now, and i no longer care what anyone thinks of it, because it's me. and if you don't like me, then i guess it's better all around if you just know it, isn't it?

| i saw a headline that said, "48 million still don't use seat belts."
oh god what is wrong with our country and government. yeah, people don't wear seat belts. people eat too much. people smoke (in quarantined areas where their fumes can't touch anyone else. not that i have a problem with that). these people know they are engaging in risky behavior. that could be (gasp) why they do it. but the risk affects only oneself, and so it's not the government's responsibility to say, "YOU SHOULD NOT EAT FATTY FOODS SO WE'RE GOING TO STOP YOU OKAY!" i heard about a proposed tax on junk food. terrible idea. how about people exercising self-restraint? how about not punishing the majority of the united states who (shockingly, i know) aren't obese? how about letting us have a bag of chips or an ice cream sundae every once in a while without the condescending "penalty tax"?
as for smoking restrictions, i think they are fine insofar as they attempt to protect nonsmokers from the harmful affects of the smoker's byproducts. when it gets into trying to prevent people from smoking altogether, i think that's an overreach. education, fine. but i think the government should protect our rights (even the right to smoke) as long as they do not infringe on others' (i.e. the harmful byproducts of smoking in public). i think anything that attempts to protect one from oneself upsets the very delicate balance between security and liberty, pushing it straight over into a the territory of dictatorships.
i guess thats not the only rant of the year. the other day i got into a heated discussion about whether or not the phrase "war on terror" was legitimate or complete BS.
and that i won't get into here. |
